Seed Animation Studio Research

Seed Animation is a small animation company based in Soho, London.  They have produced animations for companies ranging from Cadbury to MTV.

I love that all of their animations always have a unique twist, whether it be a very visually appealing use of colour, a cute animation technique, or just dumb sex jokes that make me giggle like an idiot.

They have produced many animations, but some of their main ones are the following.

Soreen

They produced a series of 3 animated adverts for the cake brand, Soreen.  They quickly decided that they really liked the idea of puppeteering.  They created little scenes in a fictional world of sentient pieces of Soreen.

To make this, they set up a yellow cloth background on a tabletop and stuck sticks to the back of the Soreen pieces, which they edited out later.  The sticks allowed them to control the movements of the cakes, without their hands actually having to be in the shot.  In post-production, they drew on the faces and arms, frame by frame, which was a type of rotoscoping.

Shell

They created an animated advertisement for the oil company, Shell.  It wasn’t long before they came up with a unique idea to make a stop motion animation with coffee latte art.  It was the world’s first “Latte-mation”.

They began by drawing out the whole sequence in storyboards and then making it into an animatic so that they can iron out any animated creases before production.

They then started on character development; they made about 7-ish different designs for each character.

They then combined the animatic and the final designs in a 3D environment, so that they could get a very detailed final version of how they wanted the end result to look and play out.

Next, they employed the UK Latte Art Champ Dhan Tamang.  Over the course of the prouction, he churned out over 200 pieces of latte art, based on the designs in the 3D animated short they had prepared.  He copied every single frame of the digital animation, with a separate cup of Latte art for each frame.

They then masterfully mushed everything together and polished it in Adobe After Effects, 3Ds Max, Maya and Photoshop.
